We will be walking on well-maintained hiking trails in the Saas Valley, none of which exceed difficulty level T3 on the SAC scale. If you are fit enough to climb a maximum of 600 meters in altitude at a leisurely pace and are sure-footed on mountain trails, you are well prepared for our photography workshop.

Friday: Arrival and introduction to the basics

We meet at 4 p.m. at the cozy Hotel Revier in the center of Saas-Fee. After checking into our modern rooms, we get to know each other on a tour of the picturesque mountain village and warm up with our cameras for the days ahead.

After a hearty dinner, we meet again in the evening for a theory session on camera settings to be well prepared for the coming day. We discuss the schedule for Saturday before saying goodnight.

Saturday: Photography and hiking around Saas-Fee

Our day starts early because we have a lot planned. After an early but hearty breakfast, we spend half the day outdoors hiking in the autumn countryside, surrounded by the impressive four-thousand-meter peaks of the Saas Valley. While our hiking guide ensures a safe and discovery-filled route, we learn everything about outdoor photography of landscapes and people while hiking. The impressive mountain scenery provides the perfect backdrop for unique pictures, and the valuable tips from a professional photographer will ensure that you reach a whole new level of photographic quality in the future. We will cover the following topics in detail:

  • What camera settings are recommended?
  • How do ISO, aperture, and exposure time relate to each other?
  • What settings are recommended for static or dynamic (e.g., people in motion) subjects?
  • Automatic mode vs. manual mode: which is best to use in which situations?
  • Tips and best practices for image composition to create impressive and exciting images
  • Material science relating to cameras, lenses, and recommended accessories
  • Use of filters and other tools
  • Photographing with a tripod

After a short break at the hotel in the afternoon, there will be an opportunity to capture the evening light and sunset on camera after a trip up the mountain by cable car. Afterwards, we will take a leisurely hike back down to the illuminated village of Saas-Fee, with the help of our headlamps if necessary. We will spend the rest of the evening in a relaxed get-together, answering questions and reviewing the events of a varied day.

Sunday: Still life, image editing, and course completion

Once again, we start the day with a delicious breakfast before turning our attention to image editing. You will learn how to get the most out of RAW format images using Adobe software (Lightroom) and what options are available for mobile image editing.

Afterwards, we will go on another short hike in the larch forests of Saas-Fee and apply what we have learned while keeping our eyes open for idyllic still life moments to round off our photographic portfolio from the past few days – we will also discuss photography with smartphones and compare the results with those of a camera.

Finally, we will answer any remaining questions, and then an eventful weekend will come to an end and we will unfortunately have to say goodbye to each other – with lots of new knowledge and great (photographic) memories in our luggage.

The Saas Valley is an ideal base for hiking and photography. The impressive Valais mountains provide the perfect backdrop, while the golden yellow larch trees add the finishing touch to the already colorful, but sometimes melancholic, autumn atmosphere.

Countless hiking trails and the Saas mountain railways allow us to easily reach exciting locations for our photographic excursions without having to lug heavy camera equipment around for too long. Saas-Fee is an idyllic mountaineering village, which develops a very special charm in autumn and, picturesquely nestled between the four-thousand-meter peaks of the Mischabel, is a perfect starting point for our photography workshop.

The meeting point is at 4 p.m. on Friday, October 24, 2025, at the Hotel Revier in Saas-Fee. The course ends on Sunday afternoon between 3 and 4 p.m.

Participants are responsible for their own travel to and from the course. At the entrance to the car-free village of Saas-Fee, there is a large, paid parking garage (charging stations for electric cars are available). The Saas Valley is also easily accessible by public transportation and can be reached by train to Visp and then by bus.

The Revier Mountain Lodge in Saas-Fee is the new star in the hotel firmament – it only opened in January 2025 and is already our favorite place to stay in the Saas Valley. Located in the heart of the village, it offers cozy rooms with lots of wood, comfortable beds, and modern design. The car-free village center of Saas-Fee ensures peaceful nights and restful sleep at an altitude of 1,800 meters in the crystal-clear Valais mountain air.

The generous breakfast at Hotel Revier is included in the price. For dinner, half board can be booked as an option at Hotel Revier (recommended). Guests can either dine à la carte at the hotel at their own expense or explore one of the many restaurants in Saas-Fee on their own.

For the photography workshop and hikes, you should pack the following:

  • Daypack (20–30 liters) with a pocket for your camera or photo backpack
  • Hiking boots with good tread
  • Weatherproof, breathable, and warm hiking clothing (we will be hiking at altitudes between 1,800 and 3,000 meters in autumn) according to the layering principle
  • Rain jacket
  • Sunglasses & sun protection
  • Snacks and drinks
  • Hiking poles optional
  • Digital camera (DSLR or compact camera, ideally with the option to shoot in RAW format)
  • Charger and/or spare battery(ies) for your camera
  • If available, you can bring a tripod or filter (polarizing filter, ND filter).

You will receive a detailed equipment list after registering.
