2. Route descriptions, maps and GPX tracks

In our Online Magazine, we describe tours with route descriptions, maps, topo sketches, difficulty ratings and GPX tracks. This information is meant to help you plan, but it replaces neither your own experience nor careful tour planning on site.

Please note in particular:

  • No official routes. Unless expressly stated otherwise, our tour suggestions are not official, signposted and secured routes. Some of them run away from marked paths.
  • Conditions change. Snow, weather, rockfall, debris flows, glacier retreat, construction work or path closures can change a route at any time or make it impassable. Our descriptions reflect the situation at the time we did the tour.
  • Difficulty ratings are assessments. We follow the difficulty scales of the Swiss Alpine Club SAC, such as the hiking scale (T1 to T6), the snowshoe scale (WT1 to WT6) and the scales for ski tours and alpine tours, as well as our own experience. How difficult a tour feels, however, depends strongly on conditions, fitness, sure-footedness and experience.
  • GPX tracks may be inaccurate. For technical reasons, recordings deviate from the actual course of the path. A GPX track replaces neither a map, nor orientation skills, nor a look at the terrain. In winter, the sensible line also depends on snow and avalanche conditions and may differ from the track.
  • Times and distances are guidelines excluding breaks and apply to reasonably experienced mountain hikers in good conditions.

Tours away from marked paths: Snowshoe tours, ski tours and alpine tours as well as some hikes run entirely or partly away from marked and secured paths. Such tours are not official, signposted and secured routes. They are neither groomed nor checked and are not secured against alpine hazards such as avalanches, falls, rockfall or crevasses. Assessing conditions, terrain and hazards is entirely up to you. Depending on the tour, you need knowledge of avalanche safety, navigation or crevasse rescue as well as the corresponding equipment, such as an avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe, ice axe, crampons or rope. You can find officially signposted hiking trails, winter hiking trails and snowshoe routes at Swiss Hiking Trails.

Before every tour, check the current conditions, in particular the weather at MeteoSwiss and, in winter, the avalanche bulletin of the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF. Choose tours that match your skills and equipment, and turn back if in doubt. The mountain isn't going anywhere.

You undertake the tours described entirely at your own responsibility. To the extent permitted by law, we accept no liability for accidents, injuries or damage arising in connection with the use of our route descriptions, maps or GPX tracks.

Would you rather do a tour with a guide? We also offer many tours as guided tours.
