The artwork story

What at first glance appears to be an abstract texture reveals itself as one of the boldest structures in the Alps: the Grande Dixence dam wall, captured from a bird's-eye perspective. The concrete sweeps in powerful curves from the crest to the base, marked by water, time and weight. Tiny figures on the crown – barely recognisable – give the image its true sense of scale: this structure was built by human hands, and yet those hands seem infinitely small before it. The turquoise water of the reservoir shimmers at the top of the frame, almost surreal in its colour, almost tender in contrast to the raw concrete surface below. The wall holds back what the mountains release – millions of tonnes of meltwater, stored, contained, put to use. Autumn-coloured trees at the base serve as a reminder that this colossus stands within a living landscape, not apart from it. A image that seeks no romanticism, but finds a different kind of beauty: the beauty of scale, of precision, of human will in dialogue with the Alps. Grande Dixence is engineering as landscape feature – and this image makes exactly that visible.
