The snowshoe hike in Val d'Anniviers is technically easy and requires no special experience. We’ll hike at a leisurely pace suited to the group, with an elevation gain of approximately 200–250 meters.

We’ll meet at 9:45 a.m. at the lower station of the funicular in St. Luc, timed to coincide with the arrival of the PostBus. The funicular will take us up the first few meters in elevation; once at the top, we’ll strap on our snowshoes, and I’ll briefly show you how it all works.

Then we’ll head out into the open: gentle slopes, crunching snow, and a panorama that will have us stopping regularly to take photos. I’ll handle the photos—you can just sit back and enjoy the view. Along the way, I’ll share interesting facts about the region, explain the tracks in the snow, and discuss why the sun shines so often up here.

At lunchtime, we’ll stop at the Hotel Weisshorn. We’ll be back in St. Luc around 4 p.m., in time for the PostBus and train home.

St. Luc is situated on a sunny terrace high above the Val d'Anniviers. In winter, that means clear air, plenty of light, and far less hustle and bustle than in the big ski resorts. Add to that the old Valaisan wooden houses in the village and the surrounding peaks, the kind you usually see on postcards.

In two hours, you’ll be in the Valais from Zurich; from there, the PostBus will take you up the winding road from Sierre to St. Luc. Enjoy a coffee on the train, take in the views on the bus, and have your snowshoes on in no time. By car, it’s about 30 minutes from Sierre; parking is available at the valley station.

After booking, we’ll send you a detailed packing list so you can set out safely and well-prepared. The most important things: warm clothing layered according to the “onion principle,” sturdy and waterproof shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and something warm to drink. You can bring your own snowshoes and poles or rent them from me.

You must always carry the following safety equipment in your backpack:

  • Avalanche transceiver (avalanche search device)
  • Shovel
  • Probe

If you don’t have this equipment yourself, you can rent it from us.

On Your Own: Travel to and from the Tour

Mountain rail ticket

Meals during the tour

Snowshoes and poles (optional; available for rent from us)

Avalanche gear (optional; available for rent from us)

The tour takes place in almost any weather. In the event of a storm, treacherous snow conditions, or an increased risk of avalanches, we’ll switch to an alternate route or postpone the tour. If the minimum group size of four people isn’t met, I’ll contact you no later than five days in advance, and you’ll receive a refund or be able to reschedule free of charge. Insurance is the responsibility of the participants (accident, illness, liability). I recommend becoming a Rega member and purchasing trip cancellation insurance.

Non-binding request

Your non-binding request will bring you one step closer to your experience. I will get back to you shortly with further information on dates and the exact procedure and discuss the next steps together.

Questions? Answers!

Still have questions about the offer? I have compiled the most important information for you.

No. If you can walk, you can snowshoe. At the start I'll show you how the bindings work and how to move comfortably uphill and downhill. After ten minutes it feels normal, after twenty you won't want to take them off.

If you can manage a relaxed two to three hour hike, you're in the right place. We climb 200 to 250 metres in total, with plenty of breaks. The group sets the pace, and by group I mean whoever likes it most leisurely.

Absolutely. Most people sign up solo or as a pair, and that's exactly what the group dates are for. By the first break, everyone knows each other.

Several thin layers rather than one thick one, because you'll warm up faster than you think. Add waterproof hiking boots, gloves, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Ski trousers work, and so do hiking trousers with thermals underneath. You'll get the full packing list after booking.

No problem. You can add snowshoes and poles to your booking. I'll bring everything along in the right size.

I take pictures along the way, no posing required (though you're welcome to). Within [x days] you'll receive a link to download the edited images. If you'd rather stay out of the frame, just let me know at the start.

Light snowfall is part of the fun and often the prettiest time to be out. In stormy or tricky conditions I'll pick an alternative route or we reschedule. If I cancel the tour, you get a refund or rebook free of charge.

From four bookings, yes. If the group doesn't come together, I'll be in touch at least two days ahead, and you can get your money back or switch to another date.
